TARLAKENYO (April 17, 2025) — The Philippine entertainment industry is in mourning following the death of legendary actress and singer Nora Aunor, who passed away yesterday at the age of 71, according to her son Ian de Leon.

There is no official word on the cause of death, but it was reported that she was at a Pasig hospital for a ‘procedure’.

Known as “The Superstar” of Philippine cinema, Aunor was a cultural icon whose career spanned over five decades. Her work earned her critical acclaim and a devoted fan base.

A LEGENDARY CAREER
Born Nora Cabaltera Villamayor on May 21, 1953, in Iriga City, Camarines Sur, Aunor rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most celebrated figures in Philippine show business. She first gained fame as a singer, winning the Tawag ng Tanghalan amateur singing contest in 1967. Her soulful voice and relatable charm quickly made her a star, leading to a successful recording and film career.

Aunor transitioned into acting and became one of the most respected dramatic actresses in Philippine cinema. She starred in over 170 films, many of which are now considered classics. Her performances were marked by emotional depth and authenticity, earning her numerous awards, including multiple FAMAS, Gawad Urian, and Luna Awards.

Himala (1982) — Widely regarded as one of the greatest Filipino films of all time, her portrayal of Elsa, a faith healer, earned international acclaim.

Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos (1976) — A wartime drama that showcased her dramatic range.

The Flor Contemplacion Story (1995) — A powerful performance that earned her a Best Actress award at the Cairo International Film Festival.

Thy Womb (2012) — Her performance as a Badjao midwife earned further international recognition.

Beyond her film career, Aunor was also a successful television actress and recording artist, with hits like Pearly Shells and Superstar.

Aunor received numerous accolades throughout her career, including the Gawad CCP para sa Sining (Cultural Center of the Philippines Award for the Arts) and the Order of National Artists for Film and Broadcast Arts in 2022 by then-President Rodrigo Duterte. Nora Aunor is survived by her children — Lotlot, Ian, and Matet — and grandchildren. A tribute is planned to honor her contributions to Philippine arts and culture.
