Paniqui’s Benedicto wins IRONMAN 70.3

SUBIC BAY, Zambales — Long before he conquered the international triathlon stage, August Benedicto was a young boy pedaling a bicycle to deliver blocks of ice under the scorching Paniqui sun. On June 7, 2026, those years of grit culminated in immense pride for his hometown as he captured the men’s division championship at the 10th anniversary of the prestigious Century Tuna IRONMAN 70.3 held here.

Benedicto, 42, a triathlon veteran currently based in Ireland, overcame a formidable field of competitors from 45 countries to secure a stunning come-from-behind victory.

The Paniqui native faced an early deficit after falling behind during the swim leg of the race. However, he systematically closed the gap during the bike segment before ultimately seizing the lead in the final stretches of the 21-kilometer run course. He crossed the finish line with an official time of 4 hours, 40 minutes, and 38 seconds to claim the men’s title, showcasing the endurance, discipline, and determination that have made him one of the most enduring names in Philippine triathlon.

In recognition of his outstanding achievement, Benedicto was honored with the Bagong Bayani Award alongside women’s champion Bea Quiambao, a special accolade reserved for elite Filipino athletes who continue to raise the national flag in international endurance sports.

Following his win, Benedicto shared a celebratory post on social media, saying: “Good day today! Finished first overall in Subic Bay 70.3 celebrate with my Bulalo!”
