Tarlac hosts nuke drills as multinational forces sink target ship off Paoay for ‘Balikatan 2026’

CAMP AQUINO, Tarlac City (May 6, 2026) — The Philippine Army and its international counterparts intensified the 41st iteration of Exercise Balikatan on May 6, 2026, conducting defense capabilities hardening in the plains of Tarlac while simultaneously making a high-stakes maritime strike in the north while simultaneously hardening defense capabilities in the plains of Tarlac.

Critical ground-based maneuvers took center stage at Camp Aquino in Tarlac City. Philippine Army CBRN soldiers and US Army troops engaged in mock chemical scenarios to sharpen combined response capabilities against Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive and Ordnance Disposal threats. These bilateral drills are designed to reinforce the interoperability and readiness of both forces when operating in complex and hazardous battlefield environments.

The training in Tarlac also extended to combat engineering, with troops practicing the construction of field fortifications and rapid obstacle emplacement. These exercises are intended to improve the ability of combat engineers to secure key terrain and enable follow-on operations throughout the region.

While ground-based warfare scenarios are being staged in Tarlac, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Philippine Army Chief Lt. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete spearheaded the observation of the Maritime Strike Exercise from Camp Aguinaldo.

The coordinated operation saw a multinational force composed of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the United States Armed Forces, the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, and the Canadian Armed Forces deploy advanced missile systems and aerial assets. The integrated strike successfully neutralized the decommissioned Philippine Navy warship, BRP Quezon (PS-20), off the coast of Paoay in Ilocos Norte.

The scope of Balikatan’s 41st iteration further reached into Aurora and Nueva Ecija. In Dingalan, troops conducted pier survey drills to assess the condition of underwater structures for cargo unloading, while Philippine Army Special Forces facilitated jungle survival training for US Army soldiers in Fort Magsaysay.

The Philippine Army and its partner militaries are scheduled to conclude the various combined and joint training exercises of Balikatan on May 8. This year’s iteration continues to focus on the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ expanding capability to conduct integrated operations alongside key partners to advance regional security and freedom of navigation.
