TSU students bring Tarlac heritage to life via NFC tech

TARLAC CITY, Tarlac (March 2, 2026) — In a pioneering initiative that fuses culture with innovation, students from the Department of Fine Arts at Tarlac State University (TSU) launched a pilot project on February 28, 2026, that allows visitors to “tap into” history at the Diwa ng Tarlac cultural center.

The project integrates Near-Field Communication (NFC) technology into the center’s cultural dioramas, enabling visitors with NFC-enabled smartphones to access a wealth of multimedia content simply by tapping their devices near embedded tags.

Once tapped, a notification leads users to a dedicated website where they can explore in-depth historical narratives, images, and other interactive content related to the specific exhibit.

The website serves as a digital gateway to a wide array of cultural and historical highlights. Visitors can explore the rich heritage of the province through features on historical churches such as the Iglesias Parroquial de Camiling and Monasterio de Tarlac, as well as traditional folk drama Moro-Moro Tarlaqueño and folk dance including La Jota Moncadeña.

The site also delves into historical inventions such as Muscovados de Tarlac, recounts the story of the Ferro-Carril de Tarlac or the now-abandoned railroad station, and reflects on tragic events like the Capas Death March, among many other significant narratives.

While NFC technology is commonly used in contactless payments and data sharing, this project reimagines its potential as a tool for cultural preservation and education.

The discreet NFC tags are embedded into the dioramas, ensuring that the artistic integrity of the exhibits remains intact while offering sustainable and easily updatable access to information.

The pilot presentation was led by Mr. Kenneth Leo Pamlas, a faculty member of the TSU College of Architecture and Fine Arts, alongside three Fine Arts students and Mr. Dax Simbol from the Tarlac Tourism Office.

The project not only enhances the visitor experience but also opens doors for future applications of NFC technology in museums and cultural sites across the country.

Diwa ng Tarlac now invites the public to experience this seamless blend of culture and innovation firsthand. With just a tap, history comes alive—offering a deeper connection to the stories that shaped the province.
