TARLAKENYO (June 8, 2024) — The severe heat and dry spell in the country has officially ended, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in a statement released yesterday.
The weather agency said “… the end of El Niño, as the conditions in the tropical Pacific have returned to El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-neutral levels. Moreover, a transition from ENSO-neutral to La Niña remains likely (about 69% chance) by July-August-September 2024 season.”
According to PAGASA Administrator Nathaniel Servando, the La Niña will likely come by the third quarter of 2024.
“With these developments, the final advisory for El Niño (2023-2024) is issued and the PAGASA ENSO alert and warning system is now lowered to inactive (ENSO-neutral) while the La Niña Watch remains in effect,” Servando said.
PAGASA will continue to monitor any significant developments in this climate phenomenon closely.
Concerned government agencies and the general public are encouraged to monitor and take precautionary measures against impending climate impacts.
