Radio broadcaster killed while on-air

TARLAKENYO (Nov. 5, 2023) — A radio broadcaster in Misamis Occidental was killed in the middle of his live broadcast this morning.

According to the Calamba Municipal Police Station, Juan Jumalon, 57, of 94.7 Gold FM, the broadcaster was airing a greeting when a suspect barged in and fired two shots at the victim. The broadcaster died on the spot.

The live feed inside the victim’s house also saw the suspect take the necklace of Jumalon before taking off.

Police are still investigating the incident.

Meanwhile, the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) called on the Philippine National Police for the immediate activation of a Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) after the killing.

“The creation of an SITG on incidents like this is among the agreed protocols among the agencies within the PTFoMS,” USec. Paul Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez also alerted the National Bureau of Investigation, which is also part of the PTFoMS to start gathering evidence in support of the police investigation.
