22 Asian countries vie for athletics championships at New Clark

CAPAS, Tarlac (Nov. 5, 2023) — At least 1,400 athletes descend on New Clark City for the 22nd Asia Masters Athletics Championships on Nov. 8 – 12, 2023.

The biennial sporting event for athletes aged 30 and above will be from 22 countries.

There would be an age grouping of five-year gaps in different track and field events.

The Philippines will be fielding 159 athletes. Among them are former national team members Arniel Ferrera, Danilo Fresnido, Eduardo Buenavista, Sean Guevarra, and Emerson Obiena, father of world No. 2 pole vaulter EJ Obiena.

The last edition was held in 2019 in Kuching, Malaysia. Jakarta, Indonesia was supposed to host the 22nd edition in 2021 but returned the right to organize the event to the Asia Masters Athletics (AMA) due to the pandemic.

“We are very grateful to the AMA council for giving us a chance to host the championships. We believe that we can do the job. We believe that the masters athletes will enjoy the competition at our beautiful stadium and city,” the President of the National Masters and Seniors Athletics Association of the Philippines, Jose Ang Jr., said.
