Tarlac joins HANDA Pilipinas 2026 resilience push

CLARK, Pampanga — The Province of Tarlac affirmed its commitment to disaster preparedness and climate resilience by participating in the opening ceremonies of HANDA Pilipinas 2026 – Luzon Leg on October 26, 2026, at the SMX Convention Center Clark.

The three-day event, which runs until October 28, is spearheaded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) – Central Luzon and carries the theme “Agham at Teknolohiya Para sa Ligtas at Matatag na Bayan.”

Governor Christian Yap led the Tarlac delegation, joining fellow local chief executives from the province, including Mayor Joyce Agustin of Camiling, Mayor Kat Roxas of Paniqui, Mayor May Eclar of Gerona, Mayor Celso Banag of Ramos, and Mayor Bong Tan of Santa Ignacia. Representatives from the provincial and local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (DRRMOs) also attended.

The opening ceremonies gathered key national and regional officials, including DOST Secretary Renato Solidum, Jr., DOST Undersecretaries Engr. Sancho Mabborang and Teodoro Gatchalian, and DOST Central Luzon Regional Director Julius Caesar Sicat. Also present were NDRRMC Executive Director Usec. Harold Cabreros and DILG Region III representative LGOO VII Lerrie Hernandez.

The event highlighted the vital role of science, technology, and innovation in strengthening emergency response. It featured the ceremonial turnover and launching of disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation projects, the activation of HANDA Pilipinas, and the opening of technology clinics and exhibits showcasing innovative solutions for disaster resilience.

In his message, Governor Yap emphasized the importance of the partnership between the province and DOST.

“Katuwang ang DOST, patuloy po nating isusulong ang mga makabagong solusyon para sa isang mas maunlad at mas resilient na Tarlac,” he said, underscoring the collective effort to advance science and technology for a safer and better-prepared Philippines.

The participation of Tarlac’s provincial and local DRRMOs likewise underscored the need for stronger coordination among local governments, national agencies, academic institutions, and communities in building a more resilient Luzon.

Through HANDA Pilipinas 2026, DOST continues to strengthen partnerships that translate science-based solutions into effective disaster preparedness and response measures. For Tarlac, the event served as another opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to proactive governance and to ensure that innovation reaches communities most vulnerable to disasters.
