TARLAKENYO (May 12, 2026) — The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Tuesday called on the Senate to immediately convene as an impeachment court and proceed with the trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, following the House of Representatives’ transmission of the Articles of Impeachment.
In a statement released on May 12, the CBCP appealed to senators “to abide by what the Constitution directs,” urging them to avoid any act that could be seen as evading their sworn duty. The bishops emphasized that delaying the trial would “delay justice for both the Filipino people and the Vice President.”
The House, citing overwhelming public sentiment and probable cause, voted well beyond the required one-third of its membership to impeach Duterte and forward the case to the Senate.
The CBCP also called on the public to remain vigilant, fight misinformation, and ensure a fair and credible trial. “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free,” the statement quoted John 8:32.
The bishops asked the faithful to join in prayer to Our Lady of Fatima, whose feast falls on May 13, for the nation and its leaders.
