TARLAKENYO (Sept. 7, 2025) — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has signed into law Republic Act 12237, officially designating a parcel of land in the municipalities of Mayantoc and San Jose, Tarlac, as the Mt. Sawtooth Protected Landscape.
The new legislation aims to preserve the area’s rich biodiversity and natural resources while safeguarding the rights of indigenous communities residing there.
The bill, which was principally authored by former Tarlac 2nd District Representative and current Tarlac Governor Christian Yap during the 19th Congress, marks a significant step in environmental conservation for the province. The protected area covers critical ecosystems that support local wildlife and contribute to the region’s ecological balance.
In a social media post, Governor Yap said that this will ensure the preservation of natural resources in the 12,676-ha. area.
“Layunin nito na mapangalagaan ang ating kalikasan at matiyak ang patuloy na pag-iral ng ating mga katutubong halaman at likas na yaman para sa kasalukuyan at darating na henerasyon,” Yap said.
He extended thanks to fellow lawmakers, including Representatives Noel Rivera and Jaime Cojuangco, as well as local officials who supported the measure.
Environmental advocates and local groups have welcomed the law, noting its potential to prevent deforestation and promote sustainable tourism in the area.
This signing comes amid broader national efforts to expand protected areas, with a companion law, RA 12238, declaring Panaon Island in Southern Leyte as another protected landscape.
