TARLAC CITY, Tarlac (Dec. 16, 2025) – The solemn and much-anticipated start of the Simbang Gabi or Misa de Aguinaldo was held on Tuesday at the Tarlac City Plazuela, led by Most Rev. Roberto C. Mallari, Bishop of the Diocese of Tarlac. Assisted by priests from the Cathedral, the service drew a large number of parishioners for the commencement of the nine-day spiritual preparation for Christmas.
This marks the first Simbang Gabi celebrated by Bishop Mallari since his installation as the fourth bishop of Tarlac in March 2025. In his homily, Bishop Mallari centered his message on forgiveness and reflection in anticipation of the birth of Jesus Christ. He invited the faithful, “Sa pagsisimula natin ngayong simbang gabi, tayo nawa’y magnilay sa ating mga kasalanan at maging bukas ang puso sa pagbibigay tawad sa ating kapwa.”
The celebration was also graced by the presence of Tarlac City Mayor Susan Yap and several city officials. In a Facebook post following the event, Mayor Yap shared, “Nawa’y maging inspirasyon ito sa bawat isa sa atin na magpatuloy sa pananampalataya, pag-asa, at pagmamahal sa kapwa habang papalapit ang pagsilang ng ating Panginoon.”
Simbang Gabi is among the Philippines’ most enduring religious traditions, consisting of nine dawn or evening masses from December 16 to 24. Originating in the 17th century, it was initially permitted by papal decree so that Filipino farmers could attend mass before starting their day.
The novena combines solemn devotion with vibrant festivity, as churches glow with star-shaped parols and nativity displays. Following each mass, communities often gather to share traditional treats like bibingka and puto bumbong. For many Filipino Catholics, completing all nine masses is believed to bring special grace or answered prayers, symbolizing a heartfelt commitment of faith and solidarity during Advent.
Across the Philippines, Catholic churches have begun observing this beloved tradition. At San Sebastian Cathedral Parish in Tarlac City, the remaining Simbang Gabi masses will continue on the following schedule: 5:30 PM, 8:00 PM, and 4:30 AM.
