Tarlac Braces for flooding as ‘Nika’ threatens Northern Luzon; classes suspended

TARLAC CITY, Tarlac (November 11, 2024) ā€“ Residents of Tarlac are preparing for potential flooding as Severe Tropical Storm ‘Nika’ approaches northern Luzon. The storm, which has already caused devastation in other parts of the region, is expected to bring heavy rains and strong winds to the province beginning Monday and lasting through Tuesday.

This comes after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. visited Cagayan, another area heavily impacted by recent storms. He emphasized the importance of early evacuation, highlighting the successful evacuation efforts during Typhoon ‘Marce’ that resulted in no casualties.

While the most severe rainfall is predicted for Cagayan, Isabela, Apayao, and Aurora, PAGASA has issued warnings for widespread flooding in Tarlac and other provinces including Nueva Vizcaya, Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, Benguet, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur. The mountainous terrain of these areas could exacerbate the flooding, and the cumulative effect of previous storms further increases the risk.

Local officials in Tarlac are urging residents to monitor weather updates, prepare for potential evacuation orders, and take necessary precautions to safeguard their homes and families. The province is coordinating with national agencies to ensure resources are available for any necessary relief efforts.

Classes are automatically suspended in the province since it is under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

Concepcion mayor Noel Villanueva reminded that school officials have the discretion to suspend classes under their jurisdiction.

“Pinaaalalahanan po naming na nasa principal, head o adminstrador ng paaralan ang diskresyon sa pagsuspinde ng klase sa college level,” Villanueva said.

Although Tarlac may not face the full brunt of Nika’s force, the threat of flooding remains significant. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and prioritize safety in the coming days.
