Pope Leo XIV leads peace vigil; Tarlac diocese joins call

TARLAKENYO (April 12, 2026) — In a powerful plea for an end to global conflicts, Pope Leo XIV cried out, “Enough of war!” as he led a Prayer Vigil for World Peace at St. Peter’s Basilica on Saturday, April 11, 2026, a call that reached far beyond Rome, including the Diocese of Tarlac.

The vigil, first announced by the Pope on Easter Sunday, April 5, came amid ongoing wars in Iran and the Holy Land. Before entering the basilica, the Holy Father addressed thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square, thanking them for their presence and reminding them that peace is possible.

“War divides, hope unites. Arrogance tramples, love lifts. Blind idolatry, the living God illuminates,” the Pope said.

During the rosary prayer, which meditated on the glorious mysteries, delegations from five continents lit candles at the feet of an image of Mary, Queen of Peace — a symbolic gesture of unity.

Pope Leo urged the faithful not to see prayer as an escape from responsibility but as “the most free, universal and disruptive response to death.”

“Let’s get up from the rubble again!” he declared. “Nothing can lock us in an already-written destiny.”

Recalling St. John Paul II’s 2003 message — “Never again war!” — the current Pontiff stressed that prayer breaks “the demonic chain of evil” and builds “a barrier against that delirium of omnipotence.”

He also condemned the dragging of God’s name into “death speeches,” and called on world leaders to stop rearming and to sit at tables of dialogue.

“Enough of self-idolatry and money! Enough of the show of strength! Enough of war! True strength is manifested in the service to life,” Pope Leo said.

Tarlac diocese mobilizes faithful

Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, the Catholic Church in the Philippines heeded the Pope’s call.

The Diocese of Tarlac, under the leadership of Most Rev. Roberto C. Mallari, D.D., Bishop of Tarlac, issued Circular No. 2026-13 on April 9, 2026, directing all parishes, chaplaincies, and religious communities to organize prayer vigils on the same day.

“His Holiness Pope Leo XIV in his Urbi et Orbi message for Easter 2026 calls for Christian unity in a VIGIL PRAYER FOR WORLD PEACE on April 11, 2026,” the circular read.

“Our world today fraught with turmoil due to a regional war in the Middle East cries for peace.”

The bishop urged the faithful to gather for Holy Masses for Peace, Eucharistic Adoration, rosary prayers, and other spiritual activities.

“May April 11th be a day when as a Church united in purpose and spirit, we lift our voice in a symphony of prayer for peace,” the circular stated.

‘Each one has his place in the mosaic of peace’

Pope Leo emphasized that the responsibility for peace rests not only on rulers but on every person.

“Each one has his place in the mosaic of peace!” he said.

Describing the rosary’s repetitive rhythm as a model for how peace is built — “word after word, gesture after gesture” — the Pope warned against the “acceleration of a world that does not know what it pursues.”

He reaffirmed the Church’s role as “a great people at the service of reconciliation and peace,” even when doing so invites “incomprehension and contempt.”

As the vigil concluded, the Pope’s message resonated from Vatican City to the dioceses of the world including Tarlac where the faithful knelt in prayer, united in hope.

“The peace of the Risen Lord, which surpasses all understanding, reign in our hearts and in our world,” Bishop Mallari echoed.
